Happy New Year(ish)!
I hope your winter breaks were good, although I do realize most of you have been back for a few weeks or more. It's that time again, time for both another posted question and, unfortunately, time to begin relentless reminders that the online course is running and that it does have deadlines. Let's do the odious one first.
Reminder, the "The Joy of Mathematics" book study and online course is running and does have a deadline of completion of March 18, 2013. This deadline might seem quite a ways away, but with STAAR, spring break, and other obligations the spring just seems to fly by. Please continue work if you have been working on the course or please begin if you have not yet. This book study has many activities that may take time. As such, I recommend you start early. If you have any questions or need clarification, do not hesitate to contact me at email@example.com. Congratulations to the six individuals who have already completed some of the activities!
On to the required discussion question.
The grant provides you with equipment to enhance the instruction and learning in your classrooms. Please write briefly on how you have integrated either the ipad or the omnifix cubes into your mathematics instruction. If you have written earlier about ipad usage, you may write again, but please consider either writing about the omnifix cubes instead or describing a NEW usage of the ipads that what you described earlier.

I have used the omnifix cubes in many ways. I have used them in patterning, symmetry, fractions, arrays, geometry, and will be using it in volume. Each of my kiddos have a math box and I divided my cubes up and each has a bag of them in their box. This makes it easy for me to just tell them to get out their bag and create whatever it is that we are doing that day. They love them...something different!
I really like the omnifix cubes we got this past year. They are great manipulatives to use when teaching volume. My students always have trouble figuring volume. We used these cubes and it really made a big difference! I also used them when we were studying combinations (probability). They are great to put in a center. The cards are pretty self explanatory. There are also many number sense activities included on the cards, which my students desperately need!
I really do like using the omniifix cubes in the classroom and I am very thankful that we have them. I use them in may ways, patterns, possble combinations, fractions, arrays, and may more! I also tried using them when I was teaching volume and my students really did enjoy them. This six weeks coming up, we are going to learn about geometry and this would be a great tool. These manipulaties are good for the students because they are easy for them to use on any topic/lesson we are learning.
there is finally wifi at our elementary and i have now started to use the ipad in the classroom. The students seem to love it and respond well to technology. Although, i have not used the omnifix cubes yet i will soon use them. I think they will be useful in my tutorial group. I am very apprectiative of all the materials that i have gained through out my years with the grant and do use them.
The Omnifix cubes are a hit. The cubes are open-ended and can be used in many ways. The kids like them- everything from snapping them together in patterns, using them as counters, and making arrays in multiplication. In tutorials, I have had students write a multiplication problem on a whiteboard, use the cubes to show two groups of four, then model the array. This has also been a great manipulative because of the large quantity! Thank you for getting these for us, Christine.
My students and I have definitely enjoyed using the omnifix cubes this year. We have used them in a variety of ways. First I let my students play with them and build whatever they wanted so that way they would get it out of their system. We have used the cubes for fractions, patterns, and arrays. We are so thankful for being able to use these awesome manipulatives!
I was able to use the cubes with the volume unit. I created the Base area using the cubes and then the height. By visually showing the parts of the volume formulas, students developed a better understanding of volume and using the formulas. I also let my math intervention play games on the iPad on Fridays. The student with the highest averages and participation throughout the week gets to pick the games.
We used the cubes to form out the nets of 3D objects and it was much more fun for the students to use these rather than paper and tape. We also constucted prisms to show the base of an object and then continued to show the height. This was really an eye opener for a lot of my students. They always knew the formula but never seemed to connect it to a real object. I think they do now. When we have those few minutes left in class, the students enjoy making things with the cubes. Watching them snapping them together is so much fun. Thank you for these manupulatives.
Well, we have been blessed with Ipads and Omnifix cubes this year and my students are motivated when using either one! Since I have talked about Ipads in the past, I will focus on theOmnifix cubes. I, like everyone else, have used them for arrays, patterns, factors, prime and composite numbers, and volume. The students get so excited when I bring them out! They beg to use them during free time and I think I have many budding engineers in my classroom. They build amazing creations with them.
I have used the iPAD in my class in a variety of different ways. The apps are amazing and so fun. We play a game called "Math Mayhem" and that has been a big hit in my class. The students are able to use the iPAD & I find it successful with my struggling students. They have learned the importance of technology in a way they never would have imagined. Instead of the usual "video games" they are wanting the educational games more. We have even bought several APPS as a class in order to maximize our learning. I really hope that our school provides the students with iPADS because it would prepare us for 21st century learning and we could definitely benefit from it.
I used both the Ipad and the Omnific cubes this year.
I used the Ipad as a teaching tool. I downloaded several Math apps: MathBoard, Sushi Monster, Long Division, PearlDiver and Factor Samurai. My students liked playing the apps for repeated practice.
Math Board was my favorite because you could personalize it to the students strengths and weaknesses for computation practice.
I used the Omnifix cubes when I taught arrays, prime and composite numbers and volume. My students enjoyed making all different shapes.
I have not been able to use the ipad at school because our tech department will not allow us to use them. I've used the Omnifix cubes is small groups to show patterns, symmetry, area, perimeter, volume, fractions, and arrays. My students loved them. These hands on manipulatives helped my struggling students solve the problems better than paper/pencil.
iPad: I have had the opportunity to allow my students to use the Wikipedia app. to find basic facts about animals for their science research.
Additionally, I have used apps like EppiNote, Showme, and Educreations in small groups. What I love about Educreations: I can take a picture of a problem and have the student explain their approach to the group or I can model several strategies. I can also make manipulatives portable. For example: I have done some reteach sessions while in computer lab for those students who missed a lesson for one reason or another.
Omnifix cubes: I have used them several times through the year. I have found them useful in creating tangible bars for singapore math, Layers and buildings for Volume, or to break down tens or hundreds into ones for place value. We have also used them to make arrays for multiplication.
My students have shown great interest in both tools and I will continue to use these tools in my classroom for years to come.
I used the Omnifi cubes to find volume. I showed the students how to count by layers. I also showed my students the irregular shape with the Omnifi cubes. I made my students do different pattern slabs with the Omnifi cubes. I showed my students the Length X Width X Height by counting the individual blocks.
I used the omnifix cubes in several different ways. We used them to show factors of different numbers; for example using 12 cubes how many different ways can you show the the factors of 12. 6 rods of 2, 4 rods of 3, etc. I also used them to show layers in volume.The cubes could also be used in working with fractions.
Because our technology department does not set up our Ipads for use in the classroom, I was not able to use it this school year. Perhaps, next year will be different. As for the omnifix cubes, the use of them was during our volume lesson to show layers to identify the height, lenght and width of a shape. Of course, students just like playing with them and messing around.

~As a math team, we have incorporated the apps into our schools IPADs. We rotate using them a couple times during the six weeks. The students love the apps and seem to be very successful with them without guidance. The omnifix cubes are fabulous because the students love to manipulate and the cubes reinforce math concepts. We used them to enhance our understanding of volume!
We got permission for our students to use their own computers, smart phones, and ipads for projects. Since some students do not have personal devices available I had an ipad available as well as a laptop that these students could use in class. The omnifix cubes were really helpful for helping students to draw nets, and understand the difference between surface area and volume. These cubes were much easier to use compared to the snap cubes we have used in the past.
I used my Ipad during after school tutoring. The kids loved the Math Meteors game app where they have to hit the factors sort of like the old time asteroids game. Also during the month of October there is a free game called Math Zombies and they have to shoot the facts and or factors. I also had them compete with fruit ninja where they had to keep score and afterwards place the scores in order from least to greatest. Also I had them find the range and the average even though 4th TEKS are not for that I wanted them to subtract the highest from the lowest score. I projected the game on the infocus so everyone could participate in one way or another.
