What has your experience been with Moodle?

Some site members posted a link to the online course management system (or Virtual Learning Environment), Moodle.

Does your school use Moodle? Do you find this tool useful?

I am taking a class using Moodle. So far so good. What it looks like from the administrative side, I don't know.  It is something the state department of education is using. My school isn't using it as of yet.

My district recently set up a Moodle server for our district. Due to costs, we decided to move away from Blackboard and into the open source market. Moodle has a great community of users and a fantastic help site. It is great for technology folks and teachers alike. In early June, we introduced the first group of teachers to Moodle. It was challenging for them, but many of them prefer the way Moodle is set up.

In order to help eliminate some of the steps for uploading documents to Moodle, we are trying to encourage teachers to use Google docs. That way, whatever they change on the Google doc, automatically changes on the Moodle site. It saves teachers time.

I will be interested in hearing from teachers that have used Moodle for a longer period of time.

I think my barrier to Moodle is seeing it in action.  I would love some access to courses or collaborations so I could get a better understanding of it.

          Hi Colleen,

I agree when I look at the Moodle website, I find it very confusing. I've never used moodle. I think you are right that it would be exciting to try it out sometime.

For those of you who would like to get a taste of how Moodle can work, try out the Moodle demonstration site at: http://demo.moodle.net/

Click on any of the sample courses (in your language of choice!) to see examples of how a Moodle course can look. When you are presented with a login screen, read the text to the right for instructions on how to log in for the administrator, teacher and student views of the courses. A pretty handy site to play with a Moodle course.

We use Moodle in the distance learning cooperative that I direct. We have two-way interactive video and blended courses. Our teachers seem to like most aspects of the Moodle platform and the cost is certainly right! I believe there is also integration with Google apps available. I have a district that is experimenting with that right now.

          Hi Michelle,

If your district is using Google Apps for Education, you can publish documents in Google Docs and embed them into Moodle. If you don't like the way the embed looks, you can always publish Google Docs and then link to them in Moodle.

The big advantage of doing this is that you only don't have to use Moodle's cumbersome upload process. Instead, you link or embed once and then each time you update your Google Doc, it is automatically updated on Moodle. This would be great for a daily agenda or other documents that are constantly changing.

There are lots of tutorials on YouTube that can assist you with Moodle or Google Docs. I found this one that clearly explains the entire process of uploading, publishing, and embedding a Google Doc into Moodle.

Hi, Everyone. Some of our schools in Alabama use Moodle for student courses, as well as for local professional development activities. Our distance learning initiative, Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, & Students Statewide (ACCESS), uses Moodle for its distance learning courses. Our state technology staff development team uses Moodle for some of its workshops/trainings, as does eLearning Alabama, our web-based professional development.

I have used Moodle with my course for administrators. It is quite easy to use. There is a demonstration site (http://demo.moodle.net/) which allows you to practice setting up different elements of a Moodle, like chat, forum, quizzes, etc. For some tutorials, go to the NJIT Moodle Instructor Tutorials. The site was created by Instructional Technology and Media Services to help faculty of New Jersey Science & Technology University work with Moodle.

As a student, I LOVE MOODLE. it is a great program and I am in the process of completing math classes to receive my CA Subject Matter Authorization Credential for the state of CA. Once you establish an account, there are resources within the site that will help you as an instructor to set up a class. I am not sure if you have to be connected with an institution, but it is definitely worth the look if anyone is considering.

My district started a Moodle Online Program 2 years ago, but the results have not been very positive. Not becuase the program (Moodle) isn't very good, it is an excellent classroom management tool, we just haven't given the teachers time to develop the courses.  To really implement Moodle at the district/site level, there has to be a committment to the use of technology in the classroom, and while we have individual teachers who use technology, we don't have a well thought out plan to make Moodle or any other program work the way it was intended. As the teacher/administrator for our Moodle Program I have learned a lot and I am always trying to improve what we have in place, but the wheels turn slowly. I would suggest that you contact the LARCSTAR Lab at San Diego State University,  http://larclab.sdsu.edu/ , they have a great Moodle Program in place for their foreign language classes.

I really like Moodle, but my low achieving students who struggle with typing and eye hand coordination have difficulty using the site in a timely fashion.

I have taken several classes with moodle via University of California Riverside Extension program and I find it to be simple and easy to use. I personally have not had any complaints as a student.

Tremendous CMS (course management system). In almost every way at least as good as Blackboard, and in some ways superior.

Successful deployment in a K-12 environment would require enthusiastic support of district leadership.

Toughest challenge is building course content - not as easy as eating pie, and time intensive.

Global community of evangelical users is one of its greatest strengths.

See MIT's work with open courseware initiative - their undergraduate courses can be uploaded as single file into Moodle and be modified for your needs. Same with UK's Open University.

A consortium of K-12 districts could do the same - combine resources, share courses, etc.

Although I have not used Moodle personally, I found two web sites that looked really great for Moodle users.

We have used Moodle in our school and I find it extremely useful.  The book by Mary Cooch "Moodle 1.9 for Teaching 7-14 Year Olds" was extremely helpful to me in designing my courses.

I used Moodle last month when I took a class on I-Works through the District.  I liked it, once I learned to navigate it.  It provided a way to complete an assignment and deliver it online to the instructor.  Another part I really liked was the on-line tutorials.  When I would forget what I needed to do next I could go back and listen or view what I needed to do.  It offered me a true picture into what on-line learning is and how eductaion as we know it is chnaging quickly.

I have yet to teach an entire class using this resource, but I look forward to doing so.  I have been using  the topic format for a project management solution for my team, and we have used it for professional development as well.

I have no choice. I work for a district that is experiencing "moodlemania". I have been using it for a couple of years. At first, I was very resistant. The reason for my reservations was simple and trite. To me, moodle is ugly. LOL Maybe it is because I am an artist and I am so visual. The way most courses are set up, there is very little to look at except text and links. I find this boring.

All our professional development trainings are on moodle. I have grown accustomed to using it. However, I am getting a little more jazzed about it because I am starting to create some moodle courses for my students. I am trying to break the "snooze factor" and looking at my moodle course development as a challenge.

Wish me luck. I will let you know how it went at the end of the school year. LOL

I deal with it throughout the year.  We ended up switching to the latest version and it seemed to change the whole look and feel of the site.  I'm still trying to reorganize my site.  If you are interested in taking a look at my resource pages for our students, go to http://galileo.dcboces.org/icampus/course/enrol.php?id=922  the keyword is ctiwbl  all lower case, I'd appreciate any feedback, as I'm still trying to improve the site.

I use adobe presenter and captivate to load short lessons, and it seems to work ok.

Let me know what you think.

      thanks.

SEE!! This is what I am talking about!! That is a great looking Moodle site. We don't have that kind of interface. Even though your site appears to be a template website, it looks great. Our moodle sites don't look that way at all.

I am wondering how I can get something like this to work with. (??????????)

That is a nice moodle site!

        Thanks for sharing!

          Hi Wizzlewolf,

As I understand it, the adminstrator of your district's Moodle site can add templates for you to use. Log into your Moodle course and select Settings under the Administration block. If you have access, locate Force Theme under the General section and see if you can change the theme. This will allow you to add some color and jazz up your Moodle site a bit.

There are lots of themes that can be downloaded from the Internet, but I believe only the administrator can add them for users.

Let me know if you have any luck.

I did have to go through my moodle administrator for the page layout, but I have access to change the theme, that's all.  Under the version we work with, you can change the layout a bit, but basically I think it is a template.  Please feel free to use anything on my moodle site that will help you with your moodle design and site. Also I believe our overall site has several help tips that the administrator put up online, so help yourself.

Many school districts in my state have investigated moving from Blackboard to Moodle servers for obvious reasons.  I'm told there is software available that makes transitioning Blackboard courses to Moodle easy.  What software have you used to do this and how did you like it.

      Hi Jane,

As I mentioned to you, the transition to Moodle from Blackboard was a bit messy for my district, but teachers made it happen and are now proficiently using Moodle. Depending on how you had your Blackboard course set up, Moodle can't recreate it perfectly. They are two different systems.

Some of our teachers selected to extract the content from their Blackboard course and resave everything. Then, import it into Moodle and organize the content how it made sense to them.

Our district guys set up a great blog with lots of tutorials and handouts for making the switch. This helped  teachers transition and understand how the new system would work with  their old content.
