This week Education Week posted information on a new study that confirms that boys outperform girls in math while girls outperform the boys in reading. Vast amount of research provide evidence for higher level of literature self-concept in girls and higher level of mathematics self-concept in boys (Byrne & Shavelson, 1986; Marsh, 1986; Marsh & Yeung, 1998; Skaalvik & Rankin, 1990; Skaalvik & Skaalvik, 2004 etc.). As academic self-concept is the strongest factor to predict academic achievement, this gender based disparity between their subject-specific self concepts exists in their performances as well...
