What are some constructive ways to use text chatting in the classroom?

Cell phones have made texting a way of life for most people, yet there is much discussion about cell phone use in schools.  Are there other means to use texting as an educational resource?

I just read about a site called Watch2gether where you can watch YouTube videos and host text chats about them at the same time. You enter a nickname for yourself, then search for a video, and use the chat column on the right side of your browser to discuss the video with others you invite  by sending them the url assigned to your chat.  Together you can watch a video and discuss it.

I realize You Tube is blocked in some schools, but I wonder if anyone has found other sites that provide opportunities for students to chat about projects, etc.

What do you think of this use of texting in the classroom?
