Are comic books art? And educational?

Today's "Day in the Arts" at ARTSEDGE gives you a brief history behind the publication of the first Superman comic: http://artsedge.kennedy-center.org/arts-days/june/01.aspx

This made me think about how popular comic book characters are today (Consider all of the movies that have come out within the past few decades, let alone past few years: The Avengers, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, etc.). And I wonder how powerful the comic book medium still is, and what educational values it can have on today's youth?

So I throw those questions out to the community, as well as the following:

  • Do you consider comic books to be a form of art?
  • Would you use comic books in the classroom? Why or why not?
  • If you do use comic books in the classroom, what do you teach with them and how?

What do you think?
