ELLs and poetry - how do you help your students understand this literary form?

I recently engaged in discussion related to poetry (April is National Poetry Month) within the Thinkfinity- Reading and Language Arts group.

As a result, I wondered how everyone teaches poetry.  Since poetry is filled with symbolism, figurative language and rhyme words, it is a very challenging literary form for our students.

Readwritethink has a great site for helping young students come up with rhyme words working with word families. http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/construct/

My students have enjoyed this interactive, but it is really best for K-2 students.

Another suggestion for helping students create poems is to use drawing/rebus in poetry.  Here is another link from readwritethink

How do you teach about poetry? Do you cover poetry with your students?

What other poetry resources can you suggest?

Please share your ideas for helping your students understand and create poetry!
