Being a young theater enthusiast can be exciting, but scary! There's a lot of work to do, especially considering that there is so often only one teacher running the show.
Try including this Shakespeare memorizing trick - paraphrase. Get your students to go through their scripts line by line, lyric by lyric, and re-phrase it into their own words. Often the process of internalizing the script and music can get those words sticking.
I'd also try and have auditions as early as possible, and ramp up slowly into heavy rehearsals. Kids will always ignore their scripts in the beginning, but giving an extra 2 weeks (even if there's only a friday read through) can be a huge help.
Most importantly is script selection. Make sure to pick something that young performers can relate to instinctively. It makes everyone's experience better if a 13 year old isn't trying to play Henry Drummond in "Inherit the Wind" (I've seen this happen WAY too often).
