This is a good day to remind students in history that their freedoms are not totally free. Many servicemen have given their lives to keep us free. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between German and the allied nations went into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. Congress changed the word "Armistice" to Veterans" in 1954 and November 11 became a day to honor all American veterans. In Science you can remind students of The Great Blue Norther of 11/11/11. That was November 11, 1911 (yes, 100 years ago) when a cold front affected the central United States. Many cities had record high temperatures in the early afternoon and record dropping temperatures by nightfall. This was the only day many cities in the Midwest were able to break record highs and lows for the same day. This dramatic cold snap was caused by an extremely strong storm system that separated the warm, humid air from the frigid, arctic air.
