Stock Market Game............did you try it?

I have been doing the Stock Market Game for the last 20 some years and LOVE it!  I actually took two student to the NECC conference when it was in San Diego over the 4th of July to present their findings at the student presentation group.  The title of their presentation was, "It Takes Money to Make Money, See Two Students That Did It!"  The Stock Market Game is a simulation where student forms groups and it gives students the chance to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in an on-line  portfolio. They think they're playing a game. You know they're learning economic  and financial concepts they'll use for the rest of their lives.  As a computer teacher, the SMG satisfied all of my standards of a PowerPoint presentation, Excel Spreadsheet, Internet Research, and Newsletter.

Check it out and let me know if you have ever participated and how you fulfilled your state standards.............something that you can easily do with the lessons.

Yes! We love the SMG!  I have used it twice in the last three years with my gifted classes.  The first year, although I had students who were incredible, they didn't really get into it very much.  This past year, I decided to try it again.  I was very leary since this year's group is very engaged socially and not interested in many things dealing with education.  But WOW - the groups I had this year were amazing.  Somehow that social interest translated into a real connection with the web, keeping up with their stocks, and finding out how their friends were doing every day.  I had two groups that came in at the top 13 percent of the state participants and was able to get local stores affiliated with some of their stock choices to donate a "happy" for them for our awards program at the end of the year - they were so surprised and really excited to participate in the SMG again.

We are experimenting with some schedule changes in our school this year and are trying to have 30 minutes each day for either tutorial or enrichment activities for all students depending on their needs - similar to what Renzulli's Schoolwide Enrichment program calls Type III, or interest, activites.  I am hoping to expand SMG to more students throughout the school during that time this year.

Since I was teaching our 6th grade gifted class (a pull-out enrichment program) it met my standards for Group Dynamics, Leadership, Problem Solving, a variety of thinking skills, Research, and communication.  We embedded the SMG into a study of the Great Depression and compared the economic situation of the 30s with that of today. We found a great website: http://www.livinghistoryfarm.org/ to support that study.  It talks about the stock market crash, farming, food production, working, school conditions - and has video interviews of individuals who remember what it was like.  We also used lessons from Virtual Economics and the stock websites from msn to support research development.

I think it is great that you tried it two years in a row.  Student will start to flock to your classes because of this concept, and it is a win-win situation with the students loving it and you fulfilling standards for Group Dynamics, Leadership, Problem Solving, a variety of thinking skills, Research, and communication.

I am saving the "standards for Group Dynamics, Leadership, Problem Solving, a variety of thinking skills, Research, and communication. " for advertisement for my Aug class............thanks!

We are going to be trying out a stock market simulation for the first time on our website hopefully later this month.  (The website is evolving, but at its foundation it is a site focused on money and financial literacy issues for teens, right now called www.irulemoney.com.) If anyone has students who you think would want to try it out in our first run, I will keep you posted when it's ready to go.
