Welcome

Welcome to the Common Core group. We welcome all questions on the implementation of the Common Core standards. Start a discussion and we'll share strategies and learn together.

The Common Core focus for February provides a way to bring authentic problem-solving into the classroom through Super Bowl Math. Check out the blog that demonstrates how the many Thinkfinity Partner resources related to this month's sports theme address key Common Core standards across the grade levels.

Are you looking for good resources aligned to the common core?

Do you want to confirm that the resources truly align to the common core using some sort of guide as you move through the year?

We have developed two interconnecting websites to answer both of these questions for you. In the past two years the South Dakota Department of Education has funded and supported the creation of the South Dakota Blueprints for Learning and the myOER.org site of curated resources.

The South Dakota Blueprints for Learning - http://sdccteachers.k12.sd.us - was developed as a guide to help teachers feel assured that they were meeting all the common core standards for each grade level as a year long progression. This site also provides links to the disaggregated standards which puts in each standard into friendly language and learning target format for educators and students. The blueprints and the disaggregated standards were developed and vetted by South Dakota educators. We invite all teachers to use these as their guides throughout the year. You can even make a copy of the blueprints and adjust them any way you find most useful to you.

Then, to support the South Dakota Blueprints for Learning, we brought educators from across the state together to curate the best of the best resources from the web and connected them to the instructional focuses within the blueprint. All of our Thinkfinity content partners are within myOER.org along with many other outstanding lessons and activities from other states and organizations across the nation. http://myoer.org

Some of our educators have created videos and will be providing webinars over the next two months to help you use both resources easily and effectively:

Webinars can be found at TIE - Workshops. We welcome you to join these webinars and hope you find both the South Dakota Blueprints for Learning and myOER.org beneficial to you.

With Common Core testing rapidly approaching next year, administrators continue to look for the right resources to prepare their teachers and students for the Common Core. Many schools have already made a full transition to these new standards, while others are still searching for the right mix of materials to help better prepare their students for the rigor of next-generation assessments.

With the generous support of Measured Progress, eSchoolNews has assembled this collection of stories and resources to help direct you to materials that educators can use to support classroom instruction. (http://www.eschoolnews.com/2014/01/02/common-core-resources-educators-can-use/)

Lesson Plans and the Common Core

Suggested lesson plans from our Content Partner, ReadWriteThink. Please create a discussion to share if you try out the lesson or make modifications to it that further enhance its usefulness.

ReadWriteThink | Tools: Story Map and Plot Diagram | K-12

Have a great story in mind? Use these tools to organize your ideas and develop a plot that will grab the reader's attention.

The Story Map interactive includes a set of graphic organizers designed to assist teachers and students in prewriting and postreading activities. The organizers are intended to focus on the key elements of character, setting, conflict, and resolution development.

The Plot Diagram is an organizational tool focusing on a pyramid or triangular shape, which is used to map the events in a story. This mapping of plot structure allows readers and writers to visualize the key features of stories.
