How To: Customize Your Group Overview Page

Group owners have the ability to customize the layout of their group's overview page. As you begin customizing the overview page, we encourage you to think about what features and content are most important to your group members and move that content towards the top of the page. By making relevant features and content easy to locate, you will increase group membership and participation.

 


 

Customizing the Layout

 

  1. From the group overview page, select Manage > Overview Page. Note: You must be the owner of the group in order to customize the layout.
  2. The layout and widget options will appear in a blue box at the top of the group page.

Changing the Layout
  1. If you want to change the overall layout of the page, choose Manage > Overview Page from the main group navigation.
  2. Then, select a layout from the choices on the left hand side of the customize window.
  3. Once you choose a layout, your group overview page will change but will not be saved until you select Publish Layout.

 

Moving Widgets
  1. If you want to change the location of a widget, choose Manage > Overview Page.
  2. Hover over any widget in your layout.
  3. Click and drag the widget to its new location.
  4. Choose Publish Layout to save the changes.

 

Deleting Widgets
  1. If you want to delete a widget, choose Manage > Overview Page.
  2. Locate the drop down menu in the upper right corner of the widget.
  3. Select Remove this widget.
  4. Choose Publish Layout to save the changes.
Adding Widgets
  1. If you want to add a new widget, choose Manage > Overview Page.
  2. Select a widget type: Content, Places, People or Other.
  3. Select a specific widget to get a preview.
  4. Select the green, Drag to Add button. Then, drag the widget to a location on your page.
  5. Choose Publish Layout to save the changes.

Changing the Title of a Widget
  1. Most widgets allow for some customization, including changing the title that is displayed.
  2. To change a title, choose Manage > Overview Page.
  3. Locate the drop down menu in the upper right corner of the widget.
  4. Select Edit this widget.
  5. Modify the widget properties.
  6. Select Save Properties.

 

 

Below is a list of the most popular widgets. As a group owner, experiment with different widgets and layouts in order to make your page more inviting.

 

Featured Content: Any discussion, blog, or document can be marked as featured content item by the owner. Those items will show up in the Featured Content widget. Change these features regularly to keep your content fresh.

 

Latest Poll: This widget displays the latest poll or results to users.

 

Watch a Tag: This widget displays all content with a specific tag. Once you add this widget to your layout, from the drop down menu in the upper right hand corner, select Edit this Widget to define a tag and customize the results.

 

Recent Content: This widget shows a list of recent content for the group. Choose Edit this Widget to customize the type of content that is displayed.

 

Related Groups: This widget displays groups of similar interest to assist your group members in locating relevant content within the community.

 

Recently Joined: This widget displays new members in order to assist your group members in locating people with similar interests.

 

RSS Subscription: Add an RSS feed from another part of the community or from another website or organization.

 

Formatted Text: This widget displays notes with formatting and links. It can be used as a welcome message, link to content, or to display a photo.
