Zero Tolerance. Period, end of story. No longer does an old saying like "Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words can never harm you." apply. Carelessness, lack of consideration, lack of etiquette have all lead to a ridiculous disregard for people's feelings. Words can and do hurt. How do we as educators combat this? How do we handle situations and redirect the focus of a child to the curriculum? How do we explain the difference between teasing and bullying? What are we doing to prevent it in our schools? How is the public being educated?
