This is a good idea. One of the questions schools in California have to answer for WASC deals with learning that goes "beyond the text". Three projects we tried last year were: 1) to make a movie poster using PowerPoint, some were very basic, a few that caught the attention of the rest of the class were quite humorous, 2) students downloaded the mp3 hip hop songs from the publisher's website, then they had to find pictures that went with the words, and then put everything together using MovieMaker and 3) Students had to "write" a telenovela, again using MovieMaker. Some of these were quite humorous due to the pictures and a few unexpected "twists". Your cartoon idea made me think of an activity where students have to compare cartoon strip characters, say Lucy in Peanuts and Mafalda.
