Verizon Foundation Partners with Pentagon Memorial Fund

Pentagon Memorial Introduction Video

A Nation Remembers: The official documentary of the Pentagon Memorial, hosted by Gary Sinise, featuring interviews with surviving family members and high ranking American leaders such as President Bush, Vice President Cheney, General Richard Myers, and Former Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld.

Working closely in partnership with Verizon Foundation and Verizon Thinkfinity Partner National Geographic, the Pentagon Memorial Fund will launch a new Pentagon Memorial Web site in the Spring of 2010. The new site will provide teachers, school groups, parents, families and friends with free online resources that will teach them about the memorial and its significance in our nation's history. These online resources will cover the history, design and construction of the memorial.

Visiting the memorial in person is not always an option, so the new website will also include a robust virtual tour of the memorial through an interactive three-dimensional (3D) experience. Supporting interactive and exceptional educational resources is core to Verizon Foundation's mission to leverage technology and our partnerships with leading education organizations like National Geographic to improve teaching and learning. The online resources developed in this project will be integrated into Verizon Thinkfinity.

The Memorial

Pentagon Memorial Park
On September 11, 2001, terrorists crashed Flight 77 into the Pentagon, killing the 59 passengers on board the aircraft and 125 military and civilian personnel who were working inside the Pentagon. Shortly after the attack, the United States Congress authorized the Secretary of Defense to create a permanent memorial on the grounds of the Pentagon.

Pentagon Memorial Park - Terrazzo The Pentagon Memorial Park consists of 184 memorial units, each of which are dedicated to an individual victim by its unique placement within the collective field. The field is organized as a timeline of the victims' ages, spanning from the youngest, three-year-old Dana Falkenberg, to the oldest, 71-year-old John D. Yamnicky. Each memorial unit is located on its respective age line—thin metal strips that cross the memorial park. This ordering develops a powerful understanding of the broad range of the lives lost, from the youngest child to the oldest adult.
