What is this "Citizen Science" Thing?

I have been hearing so much recently about citizen science. It's an awesome initiative to not only get students connected with nature and the outdoors, but also to get them involved with science and environmental protection through data collection and sustainable projects. I know as an older child (teenager or pre-teen) I knew the importance of going outside, but I just couldn't find a good reason to stay outside for long. I needed a purpose, and citizen science gives students that and more.

Now the next step to a great idea is successful implementation. I've come across these wonderful examples of citizen science across the country: Citizen Scientists Across the U.S. - National Geographic Education and Citizen Science Projects - National Geographic Education. As teachers, do you have any suggestions on how to get students outside, engaging with the world around them AND the subjects they learn in school?
