More and more apps are becoming available for students in all subject areas. In addition, study skills that require organization, research, time management, note taking, etc. can be learned via apps. Barbara De Santis suggested usingQuixey for high school topics, but it takes time to weed though and find the best ones.
Marc Johnson mentioned that EMD PTE is a great periodic table reference app available for Android and iOS devices. It goes way beyond the basic stats of an element to include historical notes, photos, and analytical testing information. I think this would be a must have on any classroom set of tablets used in a chemistry classroom. Here is a short video demonstrating the use of this app:
