I am a retired teacher (with more than 30 years of teaching behind me) but, in my "retirement" the children at my local primary school persuaded me to take up a completely new career, ie that of a poet and one that was especially put into this world to serve their needs, it seems.
So six years on, I've written well over 1000 new poems and had poems chosen in their hundreds by teachers right across the county where I live (ie West Yorkshire, England). I've had 30 books published (E-books) and five websites containing all of my poems, illustrated and many of them with voice recordings. Phew!!! What a way to sit back and relax! But I've enjoyed my work and know full well that the children love my poems, and so do the teachers. As a former teacher myself, it was obvious that I hadn't finished with the educational world at all. Last year my poems went into 188 countries of the world both from my websites and from my E-books. One of my poems has been made into an animated film.
This year I'm running two competitions: They are poetry performance competitions and are quite free for you all to enter - - - - except, remember that I am having to judge all this work, ha ha - so again, no rest for me. It is very difficult to get these things off the ground and I do hope that some of you will persuade your schools to get involved. You can see my website by simply Googling JOSIE'S POEMS (made simple at the request of the children of course), and if you go immediately to my Main Poetry Index you'll be led to the competitions. I do hope you'll persuade your schools to buy some of my books because in order to keep the website going and to pay my artists etc I do need some help. I also do skype visits to school classrooms and for both the children and myself it is lots and lots of fun. The children have usually learnt one of my poems off by heart (yes, even if for them it is a second language), and they are ready to meet me, they have their questions ready and are keen to answer mine. It is just a short visit of about 30 minutes and not expensive at all. I have to say that in the case of most schools, I'm often asked back again many times and it's really great to meet the children and work with them, and especially to give them encouragement.
So go to Google now, write JOSIE'S POEMS there, and open the magic door to my world of poetry. Don't leave and not say "hello" in my guestbook though. Oh, that would be so rude! ha ha
