I thought it might be fun to simulate an ice breaker online that could also be used in professional development trainings. You never know where this one could go.
Here are two sample Would you rather...? questions:
Directions: Now, simply answer the last question asked and then ask the next "Would you rather...?" question. You are encouraged to pose serious thought-provoking questions or go silly.
Would you rather eat an orange or drink a glass of orange juice?
I would rather eat the orange.......WHY.........because you don't know what they put inside the juice, even though they have everything on the label. My worst subject is "Science," and I don't want to try to figure out what all those long words are that are on the juice box!
This is my 42nd year of teaching, Why? Because I love it. I started teaching kindergarten in 1970, but have taught elementary, middle school, and adults.
Now, here is my "Would you rather......"
Would you rather teach Pr-K, early elementary 1-3, elementary 4-5, middle school 6-8, high school, or adults?
I find that sometimes teaching kindergarten is easier then facilitating adults, but that is a story within itself!
Personally, I would rather teach adults. Even though the challenges are great, they are responsible for their own success.
Now... My "Would you Rather Question...."
Assuming you are a teacher K-12, would you rather have a prescribed curriculum or be able to develop your own teaching topics (all of this assumes both meet the state standards.)
OK, this is an easy one..........develop your own teaching topics/concepts, but still facilitate the state standards. Personally, I teach 4th, 6th, and 8th grade computers, but was in the classroom for about 30 years, and with all of the creative resources that Thinkfinity has to offer, assisting in teaching the state standards, why teach from a book.
There are a lot of school district who have thrown out the books and invested more on technology and hands-on student centered curriculum. Tucson, AZ is one city who is known for this.
Here we go again, "Would you rather play a physical sport, like softball or non-physical sport like golf?
I suppose I will get some grief from all of the golfers out there, but I don't really think that golf (riding in a cart and swinging a club) is physical..............just my opinion.
I would rather do a "physical sport" but probably not a team sport as you mention. Something like snowshoeing, hiking, skiing.
Would you rather...take the photo or be in the photo?
Message was edited by: Kathy Naples - My apologies to Tara Washington. As I edited my reply to follow the guidelines here, I inadvertently deleted your reply to my reply.
OK, you got me................"Would you rather live out East, out West, or in the Midwest and why?"
I spent my first 50 years in the "Windy City/Chicago," with snow and freezing weather. Now I live in Mesa, AZ, where it is now 105 degress, BUT it is a dry heat!
I am now enjoying the "humidity" in New Orleans.
I'd rather live out West in the high desert. Having traveled all over the world with my husband who was in the Air Force for 22 years, we had our final assignment in Colorado Springs and knew we were home. No humidity that left you as wet after towel drying as before as in Florida, no hay fever because of ragweed as in Ohio, and the ability to enjoy "my" mountains every day.
Would you rather lose your keys or your cell phone?
I would rather lose my cell phone, Why? Because if I lost my keys, I couldn't get home or in the house to use my land line!
OK, my turn and I am hungry . So would you rather eat meat, chicken, or fish.
About ten years ago I would say, "meat." Now that I am more mature, I would say "fish."
Fish has protein and less fat and calories................and I am all about how FAT I look!
WOW! This has become quite a topic!
I would rather: Eat the orange, I love the smell when peeling the orange
Teach 4-6 there is so much for them to learn
Develop my own topics within the curriculum
Physical Sports: Go USA women soccer team!
Take the photo I'm always "caught" with the goofy look
Live any where with all 4 seasons, I love the change
Lose my cell phone, I can't live without my keys
Eat fish, I don't do that enough
Now, would you rather: read a book on a device, or read a hardbound or paperback book? I still love the physical book, the smell the feel of a book especially if it is new.
Here we go again, but this is now getting interesting!
I would rather read a hard copy/paperback book. Why, because I read too many books, and it would cost me too much $$$$ every time I downloaded another book. What I do is go to the library and get books for $1. I don't have a due date, and they are now mine. I take them to my condo in Mexico for others to read. So now I have a library at home and a library at my condo.
Next question: "Would you rather have a BIG breakfast and small dinner, or a BIG dinner and a small breakfast?"
Five years ago, I would rather have the BIG dinner, but now, being so mature, I reallize that my BIG dinner only made me feel tired and put on weight. It is a proven fact that if you have the same amount of calories each day, but have the bigger meal in the morning, you will lose weight not gain. Eating late at night will put on the pounds!
I'll take a big breakfast and a small dinner, please.
When I was in Berlin, Germany, and my husband worked at Berlin Air Safety, we associated daily with the Soviets, French, and British officers.
The Soviets had a saying that stuck with me, "Have breakfast for yourself, have lunch with a friend, and give your dinner to your enemy." :-)
New Question: Would you rather know everything about your government officials or have some things kept secret?
Wow Jane, what a change in question topics!
Ok I would LOVE to know EVERYTHING about MY government officials! Full disclosure! We are all humans, we all make mistakes and we are all bound to "get caught" at some point. I thinka government official is no exception, and if we are able to see that as a public we will be more apt to make better decisions about our officials at the voting booth.
PS Jane I was born ad raise in Ohio! I live in the Philly area now. Here in philly we have MORE Humidity AND the SAME amount of ragweed. I would LOVE to try the West for a change!
So her is my question.
Would you rather. . write an essay on a topic OR create a presentation on a topic?
I would rather go to a movie and of course, lunch/dinner before or after. I was never much for plays and live theater, but I know that everyone else just loves them. All of my girlfriends can't wait to go to performances.
Now since it is the summer time and some of us are thinking of and going on vacations; "Would you rather go on a cruise or stay at a resort...........now if you say resort, would it be an all inclusive?"
What a fun ice breaker!
I would rather camp out. I am new to camping since meeting my husband and I have fallen in love with sleeping under the stars and waking up to the fresh air and sound of birds. Like Lisa mentioned... there are a lot of bugs while camping. For the past year, we have been camping all around Australia and if you go out of the tent in the middle of the night you see all the critters crawling around. Our tent is covered with snails and there are spiders all around. I just think to myself that they can't get in the tent and in the morning, they will all be gone. Sure enough, when I wake up, the insects are gone and no one got bit. One time I took back a big Huntsman spider in my suitcase and it scared the wits out of me when unpacking.
My question is:
Would you rather do one load of laundry every day or do several loads one day a week?
I am still pondering this questions since I have 4 kids, I know it makes more sense to just throw a load of laundry in the washer in the morning, but then I feel I am constantly folding and putting away clothes. On the other hand, if I do it all in one day, it is a bit overwhelming.
Tammy, I am the one load of laundry every other day person. But then it is only my husband and me. :-) Makes a huge difference.
Would you rather read a book or listen to a book?
I read so much that when I am on the road, I love to listen to books on CD or that I have downloaded. My learning style is not reading even though my job requires so much of it.
I would rather take a vacation in the mountains. I sunburn very easily, so the beach is out. (I am assuming the mountain would be cleared of predators. )
Would you rather be the star player on a team that never made the playoffs or the student manager for the team that won the state championship?
I guess I would rather be the student manager for the team that won the state championship because I could bask in their moment of glory. I have never been that athletic and don't really like all that attention.
Would you rather be without air conditioning during the hottest week of summer or without heat in the coldest week of winter? If you haven't guess, it is in the upper 90's right now (in NC) with heat indexes of 110.
Well...knowing that Thanksgiving is next week, I would have to say Thanksgiving dinner! I can't wait to sit down to all of the food and family chatter that will accompany it. We get togther so rarely since we are all spread out around the country.
But here's the other side of this coin...
Would you rather host the Thanksgiving meal, or go to someone else's home for the festivities?
I am often torn between the two extremes of a basal that you have no freedom with and no program at all. I definitely prefer something in the middle. I love having a qualityseries that I can use, as long as I don't feel constricted and I can add in my won fun and interactive lessons whenever they fit. Personally, I think that it is overwhelming when there is no program at all. This is from my experience as a new teacher. Veteran teachers may prefer to have no program in some cases. I love to create my own materials and lessons, but I still rely on the text books to guide me as to all of the information that I should be covering and provide me with extra resources.
Would you rather talk to an angry parent over the phone, in person, or via written communication (note home or email)?
Hi Susie and Joseph,
You both have really good questions!!! The game, if you will is to answer the question before and then pose a question for the next person. So Susie might edit her post to answer the question on air conditioning and then Joseph would edit his response to answer the question(s) Susie suggested before posing his own.
This is a fun way to start a face2face training or an online training, so I'm going to pick up on Joseph's question and get us on track.
I would rather teach students to think, solve problems, and makde decisions because that will last them a lifetime, long after that test ceases to matter so much. Course I could be looking for a job, but that has never been a problem. Course I haven't had to look in these economic times.
So, my question is "Would you rather teach during the golden days of unlimited spending or tighten you belt and teach to the basics for life long learning?"
There never were any "Golden" days of unlimited spending, so I would rather teach the basics of life long learning.
Besides, the skills and the abilities of each teacher have more to do with student learning than the school district budget.
In fact, there will always be plenty of waste and abuse (sometimes fraud) in the budgets of bureaucracies.
Evidence that budgets are inadequate lies in the approximately one billion (USD) that teachers spend "Out of Pocket" each year to acquire the materials that they really want to use with their classes.
Education in the US has always been "On the Cheap."
So, would you rather...
"Take the retirement incentive buyout and quit education so that a cheaper-prices education Newbie can take your place, or, keep working past your retirement years because you know that Newbie teachers could never do as high quality a job as you can?"
Joseph, I would retire, just like I did, and then I would come back to a part time position, just like I did.
I now teach five days a week from 8 to 9:30 AM. Sweet deal! I love what I do, I do it well, and I get paid for doing what I like to do and the time allotment I want to teach. It is a win-win situation. Newbee's come in and I stay!
Now that Dancing with the Stars is back on TV, would you rather watch that or something else at that time and why?
I have done both in my 42 years of teaching. I taught 27 years in the South Side of Chicago with troubled students and families. I walked away from that because it broke my heart to see children having to grow up in such poor conditions without care and love, but I also walked away with seeing the difference between families and how they handle education. There were Hispanic families with both a mother and father who cared for their children and valued education. That was such a wonderful experience working with those students and families, and with these families I did make a difference.
Now I work in a very affluent area in AZ where parents don't have quality time with their children or on the opposite end of the spectrum, are what we call "hovering helicopter parents" who do everything for their children and won't let themselves problem solve their way out of a paper bag. Last year I had an 8th grade student took his own life. It was heart breaking for everyone.
No school or district is perfect, and you will always have your challenges and successes.
Would you rather teach/take an online course or be in the classroom?
Question was - Would you rather teach/take an online course or be in the classroom?
I personally would rather be in the classroom. I prefer the personal interaction and the feeling of getting to know classmates, instructors, etc. This spring, I was involved in a training that lasted 6 weeks online and one week in person. During the online portion, I felt very disconnected from the class; but the final week, when we were all able to get together and interact with one another, I felt much more engaged and felt the learning process was much easier.
Working in an Adult Ed program, with individuals who have many barriers to "life", I think the one-on-one interaction is a much better fit, than them trying to do things on their own. They seem to need a little "push" some times.
On to my question.....Would you rather not be able to taste anything, or not be able to hear anything?
Looks like you had a perfect scenario to find out if you liked online vs face-to-face........and I completely agree with you about connecting with people when you are face-to-face. I have been able to meet some of my adult online learners at different conferences, and sometimes when I visit their towns, we go to lunch/dinner.........this is always a real treat!
Your question: "Would you rather not be able to taste anything or not be able to hear anything?" This question comes close to home as my favorite cousin, Maureen, is completely deaf. She wasn't born this way, but in her early 30's she started loosing her hearing............she is remarkable with lip reading, and we used to have so much fun while in restaurants/etc. She would be able to tell us what the men were saying about our group of girls from across the room.........hysterical!
She learned this without any professional training, and is just remarkable. I can't tell you how proud I am of her. She can even read your lip from the side view!
So in answer to your question, I would rather not be able to hear anything, but taste everything.......why.........because I live to eat and not eat to live!
Now would you rather talk on the phone to someone or text/email someone?
Hi, Kingston -
I agree with you - love that food!
In answer to your question - it most certainly depends on who is involved on the other end of the conversation. With some it is much easier to send an e-mail, as the conversation sometimes gets sidetracked on the phone.
I also like the e-mail route in many situations, as it allows me time to think about and develop an answer before I respond. I'm not a spur of the moment person! Definitely like to have all the facts and information in front of me before I give an answer.
Now - Would you rather travel by car or by plane?
I would rather travel by plane provided it was paid for and first class.
My would you rather.....?
Would you rather teach a group of students who are well prepared everyday having completed all
pre-assigned reading, parents are supportive of their learning and in a classroom with the latest in educational tools or, a group of students who often come ill prepared, whose parents are too busy working to really be concerned with their child's education in a classroom with a blackboard and chalk?
This is a tough one!!! In classrooms these days we have students who fit both. And parents can also be both as well. In a perfect world, I would have to say, I would want the students who are very prepared because more work gets done, which leaves more time for fun things. These children would come prepared and ready to learn, not be spending five minutes looking for a book in their desk or a page in a book!
My would you rather: Would you rather teach individually or team-teach with another teacher in the room?
Having had both experiences I would say that this one is tough because it really depends on the chemistry between the teachers who are team teaching. When the relationship is positive, respectful and both individuals believe that the other complements what they bring to the table, this can be a very powerful situation. What I really like about it is that it exemplifies 21st century concepts where you are in a collaborative environment. It models for students the give and take, and interaction that can lead to greater learning opportunities. I team taught for 8 years, and wouldn't trade those years for anything. I learned a lot about myself as well as how to choreograph a learning environment with another teacher, We both valued our students and worked hard everyday to do the best we could. Had I been paired with someone who had different values, or who didn't want to put in the time and energy to make classroom activities that engaged students, I may have hated it. I do think that having several years on my own first to gain confidence as a teacher was helpful.
My "would you rather" is "would you rather prepare and eat a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all of the trimmings, or try a new "heart healthy" meal this year?
Actually, Pati, I would rather do both. The Mayo Clinic site has some great Thanksgiving recipes that let you have your turkey and eat it, too!
Now, having had a healthy feast, would you rather go shopping at 4 a.m. to catch all the great bargains the day after Thanksgiving or shop online after a relaxing sleep in?
When you phrase it that way, I'd feel bad saying "print out!" For me, lengthy articles translate into academic articles, which probably means I'm using them for research and writing purposes. And I'm the type of learner who's still very textile when it comes to heavy research projects. So I'd rather print them out so I can easily highlight, annotate, etc. while using my computer. And I try to validate it not being "wasteful" because if I'm taking the time to print it out, it means it's something that'll go in my library and be reread multiple times.
Would you rather:
Write a best-selling novel or write a best-selling screenplay?
I would rather read a real book, BUT I am going to buy myself either a Kindle Fire or iPad for Xmas. The reason that I would rather read a real book is because that is what I am used to doing. Ask me next year after I get my new toy for Xmas.
Now, WOULD YOU RATHER GIVE OR RECEIVE? Now be honest with your answer because Santa is watching.
Oh Kingston~~~You are going to love an e-reader! I bought one of the original Nooks as my treat for traveling so much on my job. I live in a very rural area, and it is wonderful to be able to download the latest and greatest read, or go the inexpensive route and buy the books on sale. The only downside is what is does to your credit card balance....
I must rather give than receive, as I just told my husband this afternoon not to worry about it. I have already given him his gift, which was a trip we both took.
My question....Would you rather travel for the holidays, where you have to brave the crowds and weather? Or would you rather host the family and friends, where you have to do all of the preparations??
I agree with you Kingston. But you know what, I think you may change your mind. My husband has an IPad and today he loaned it to me to teach my class at church because I forgot my scriptures. It was amazing! Large print, flipping from one book to another in seconds. I loved it and so did the children I was teaching. I may add that to my list.
I like doing both, traveling and staying home to be the host. I love having my family over and being in charge. I like having people over and making them happy. Family reunions are a lot of fun. They are worth the work.
Would you rather teach a child to read or an adult?
Elizabeth and Sharon,
I guess that I should have started a new link for my question of the Kindle Fire or the iPad............now I have to really think. I guess that I should go and try both out and see what they have to offer.......if anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know.
P. S. I would rather teach an adult. After teaching fo 42 years, I now teach adults in online courses and mentor them in different schools, and they get just as excited about learning new concepts and implementing them as my kindergartners used to.
Now here is my question, would you rather have an iPad or a Kindle Fire?
Lots of things to consider Kingston....
I don't have an iPad, but I have a laptop, smart phone, and nook. So the iPad just would have been one more fun, expensive gadget. I would have needed an additional data plan in order to make full use of it.
Techie people (geeks) as I consider myself want all the technology toys!! But I would rather have an iPad because it has just a few more features than a Kindle Fire. (My granddaughter is getting a Kindle Fire for Christmas - don't tell her ).
Would you rather be a team player or a team leader?
I would rather give... I love to see the excitement in the eyes of the receiver when giving a gift, I love the aha's when giving ideas to help a child understand, I love to give my children and grandchildren kisses because I always get more than a kiss back - the hugs are the best of all! I guess that is why I am a coach and professional development provider - I love to give the gift of learning.
Would you rather watch a video or read instructions when learning how to do something?
