The election of 1860
The presidentail election of 1860 took place on November 6th. Whoever became president would be responsible for leading their side in the civil war. The campaign was between Abraham Lincoln, Douglas Breckinridge, and John Bell. The Democratic party needed Douglas to win because they had an agricultural economy, while the Republican party needed Lincoln to win. (They had an industrial based economy). Lincoln did not support slavery, while Breckinridge did. Abraham Lincoln had a lot of political supporters, more than the other two canidates. He also held the most popular vote, most of these votes came from the North. In the end Abraham Lincoln won the election and became the 16th president of the United States.
In the 1890's, the staus of the Indian people seemed to validate Frederick Jackson Turner's clain that the frountier has game, and with its going has closed the first period of American history. Natives ceased to threaten the rebublic military, and the process of educating and Christianizing reservation residents was well begun.
