What do you think of project-based learning? Often we think of projects in STEM education in terms of Science Fairs. Here is a blog post written by a teacher who uses project based learning throughout the year. In this post she presents examples from a biology class. Using this type of format allows students to express their creativity while learning about science. It also seems to motivate them to explore topics in ways that are more personal to them. Let us know what you think or if you have used project based learning in your classroom.

I definitely think project-based learning is a great motivator for students in many subject areas. It encourages students to seek their own answers, collaborate on problem-solving, raise their level of critical thinking, and become more creative and innovative.

Thought I would share this article I just read about a school in Oregon which was "transformed" by a new project-based learning curriculum focused on sustainablity. Students were divided into five cohorts, each of which would complete projects related to a subtheme—agriculture, energy, forestry, architecture, or water. All of the projects were aimed at having "tangible positive effects on the entire community."
