I know we can't be the only school district in Florida struggling to adapt the teacher evaluations to include appropriate items for virtual teachers. What adaptations are districts making to allow more accurate teacher evaluations? Are virtual teachers exempted from the new law to include student scores in the teacher evaluation? I've heard yes and no. Where can I find out and verify?
Thank you so much to all of the people willing to help.
I contacted a teacher who is currently in a virtual educator position. She's been told to maintain a digital portfolio of work, parent contact, etc. This is a great question and one I will continue to explore for you. Hoping others will respond that may know more than we do!
I contacted Florida Virtual School and here is their response:
Your inquiry was forwarded onto me and I was able to get some information from our Employee Relations Department at FLVS to answer your question. His response is as follows: “Understand there are several elements that need to be articulated as to the accountability piece. One can speak to the current evaluation system which cannot be compared to a conventional school as there are criterions that are not compatible. For example student discipline, preparing a lesson plan. Teachers are held accountable to conduct quality instruction with focus on yield, and completion of subject modules by utilizing multiple processes to instruct and execute a subject. The teacher must be certify in the subject area and is required to maintain communication with both the parent and student. In addition the teacher must practice the school Core Competencies and participate in community activities defined as Ambassador events. In a nut shell they are held to higher standard of accountability. We must also be mindful of the current changes listed in Senate Bill 736. This bill will change the manner in which we currently evaluate teachers. There will be emphasis on rubrics weighing percentages for the teacher and the student achievement.”
