How do you introduce your students to technology?

Getting a new group of students is always an exciting time of year! How soon do you introduce your students to technology? Do you find they already know how to turn/navigate a computer? What about other technologies?

It can feel overwhelming introducing a whole class to tech (meaning computers here.) I had a helpful parent who laid most of the groundwork for me as far as the prep work goes. She made it clear she would not be teaching but set up a desktop and added many of the links I wanted. I still spent many hours over the course of the year myself, making sure it would a valuable experience each week. Since our school doesn't have a tech integration spec, it is all up to the teachers. Our classroom computers are pcs and the computers on the cart are macs so the learning curve was steep for me. It was such an involved and challenging process and with such a wide range of experience among the children (few on macs) I went pretty slowly. In the end, I had some independent learners using them for all of our needs. That is always a bonus in kindergarten. I highly recommend teachers allow themselves more time to learn as they go as well. Tell the children you are learning too. They will see how you respond to a challenge and learn from that. Here is a link to my wrap-up reflection.
