Group Poll (and roll call) --Who are you?

Welcome to the Arts group in the Thinkfinity Community. This group is hosted by the ARTSEDGE team.

To get things started, we’d like to open up a thread for ongoing response—as you join our group, please take a moment to introduce yourself, and tell use the basics: Who are you, and what do you teach (or, for those non-educators, what do you do?) Are you an arts specialist, or do you bring the arts into your general classroom?

(I'll start-- I am Nuit Hansgen, and I am the director of ARTSEDGE.)

    Hi everyone,

I work with the Verizon Foundation's Thinkfinity program, overseeing schools that are closely working with the program's classroom and professional development resources. Prior to joining the program I spent 8 years teaching middle school visual arts in Loudoun County, VA. In fact, I first became aware of Thinkfinity's precursor (MarcoPolo) during an ARTSEDGE training!

      Greetings:

I am a strong advocate for integrating the Arts "in, around and through all the disciplines."  Even though I do not teach in a K-12 environment, I do have direct contact with many of those teachers, and I firmly believe that the Arts banner needs to be carried throughout our educational environment.  We need to have more Arts in every capacity in our classrooms - not less.

Using ArtsEdge is the perfect program to bring more creativity into our teaching and educational environment. Who knows what creativity might ensue from this instruction!!! My instructional level is college economics.

    Hi everyone,

I'm Bridget Hilferty, Project Manager for ReadWriteThink.org at the International Reading Association. Whenever possible, we try to integrate the arts (and particularly resources from ARTSEDGE) into the reading and language arts materials we produce.

Hello! I am Lisa Storm Fink. I am one of the Project Managers for ReadWriteThink. I am located at NCTE in Urbana, IL. After teaching grades K-4 for almost 9 years, I moved fulltime to work on the ReadWriteThink site. I am also adjunct faculty at the University of Illinois where I work with preservice students. Most importantly, I am the mom of two fantastic girls - Kelsey and Kaitlyn. As a teacher and a mom, I know how important the arts are in the development of kids, teens and adults.

I'm Allen, I work at ARTSEDGE as an interactive content producer. I've got a background in teaching, 3D animation, and games. I've been at the Kennedy Center for about 18 months. I taught high school theater and film for 3 years, moved into animation for 2, and now I'm trying to use all of those disparate skills here at ARTSEDGE.

If you ever have any questions about our content, or want to share ideas about the site and what you'd like to see, please feel free to email me at allen@artsedge.kennedy-center.org.

I'm Kenny, an interactive content producer at ARTSEDGE. My background is in music (history, education, composition and performance), with informal experience in theatre and visual arts. I've been with the Kennedy Center for six years; before that, I worked for MCI (now Verizon) for 13 years focusing on video and print production, web development, and other communications-related roles.

I'm looking forward to helping the Thinkfinity Community identify and use ARTSEDGE resources to their fullest potential. To that end, I encourage feedback as to the resources you use most, and where we can be focusing next to help support your classroom goals.

I'm Tiffany, the Program Coordinator for ARTSEDGE. My educational background is rooted in literary and cultural studies with film studies thrown in for good measure (with a B.A. and M.A. to prove it). I've been a middle and high school substitute teacher, a writing center tutor, and a college freshman writing instructor; so I'm a grammar, spell-check, reading, writing, and research machine! Education has always been important to me, as well as the performing arts, so I enjoy roles that help bring new learning experiences to people both young and old.

Greetings! I work as a professional development specialist now, but my background is teaching special education students at the middle school level. I know first hand the importance of the arts in education and in life! I believe that the arts add 'spice' to life. The arts offer the skills and experiences that help many children connect with academics. The arts can often serve as the hook and motivator for students to jump-start them into a successful life. I appreciate and value the work of our arts educators. Thank you for all you do! I love singing and was in choir/ chorus from 6th grade throughout college... and even now in church and with a communnity college chorus at Christmas time.

    Greetings to all -

I use poetry, spoken word, and performance art knowledge to educate students and teachers. This has been a very effective method in my experience as an educator. When I introduce the world of spoken word to students, it opens up a whole new world to them. I use spoken word similarities to rap music, in how they are very much related. I also show students and teachers youth reciting spoken word. It engages them and draws them in. Poetry and spoken word are great tools for self-expression. Students need avenues to express themselves. These artforms help them with that. The arts in general are worthy, full of ideas for growing student education levels, and enhances all areas of the mind, body, and spirit.

      Welcome Tim.

Hello to everyone in the Arts group. My name is Edwin Sullivant, and I appreciate everyone's love of the arts and passion for sharing their unique talents with students of the arts around the globe. I play trumpet, piano, and guitar. I like to write poetry and short stories from time to time through school. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership from Chapman University where I studied theatre, arts, and culture, as well as drawing, and creative writing. I have taught electronics and computer communications courses in Vocational Schools in the past. My favorite live stage productions are Evita and Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber. I enjoy attending opera and participating in museum events. I am currently working on my Masters of Arts in Organizational Leadership, and I will continue to think of ways to encourage students to engage in music, painting, and creative writing through various art clubs, and other organizations through Thinkfinity.  My favorite artist is Wynton Marsalis. My favorite composer is the late great Maurice Jarre' whose inspiration through the composition of music remains timeless and always helpful in guiding students in the dicovery of the possibilities for excellence in the creative arts.

      Best Regards,

      Edwin R. Sullivant

My name is Dave. I began my career with a BA in Education, with a preference in art and English composition. I received my CA Teaching credential where I taught high school art and English. After four years of that, I left secondary teaching and went back to school for an MA in art ed, and a BFA in graphic design. I've been working for the last 26 years as an advertising copywriter and art director. For the last 5 years, I've been adjunct professor at CSULB (my alma mater), Long Beach City College and Art Institute where I teach advertising design and copywriting. I am also a professional illustrator, painter and graphic designer.

As an advertising creative director, I teach as I would a mentor. I provide an atmosphere where students are allowed to think and be creative. For me, art and design is all about ideas. After that, we go into the processes how to arrive at the final artwork. While I do value the use of "technology" in the classroom, I find it as a crutch to students. Rahter than scribbling thumbnails, and coming up with ideas first, they go straight to the computer. Well, what they produce is often graphic garbage. Design for design sake...mindless work that serves no purpose. Art tells a story. No matter how realistic or abstract.

Hi.  My name is Wendy and I am a music teacher in a K-5 school in Arizona.  I can think no better subject to teach than music.  I teach 30 classes a week as well as a few after school programs.  I look forward to meeting new people who have similar interests in the Arts.

I'm Carol.  Although I've been involved in education for more than 30 years, my experience has been mainly in grant-based tutorial programs and in private schools.  In just two weeks, however, I'll begin teaching in a small "remote rural" underfunded and underserved public school.  Besides teaching Spanish, I will be the FIRST art teacher in the history of the school.  There is no art classroom, no paper, no paint, no tables and no money.  Oh boy!  I do, however, have a projector and some terrific (if not empty) shelves.  Oh, and there are no Spanish textbooks either!  So...I'll be searching the web for some terrific ideas for creating something from nothing.  I can't wait!!
