Often it is difficult to pinpoint if or when an ELL is facing additional learning difficulties impeding his/her academic growth. Classroom teachers look to us (ELL instructors) for guidance; especially when promotion to the next grade or determination of additional services/classification is suggested. It would be helpful to hear from everyone regarding their experiences related to this topic.
One recommendation is to have the student tested in their native language, to determine additional problems; but sometimes the resources for this are not readily available. What are your suggestions, thoughts?
