Jamestown Journey

After sponsoring a series of national and international signature events (spanning May 2006 - July 2007) that commemorated America's 400th anniversary and many important aspects of the Jamestown story, Verizon Foundation is now helping ensure that the vital educational resources developed to teach this important period of American history remain available to all online by hosting the Jamestown Journey Web site.

JamestownJourney.org is the official education curriculum Web site of "America's 400th Anniversary," marking the founding of the first permanent English settlement in America at Jamestown in Virginia in 1607. In 2006-2007, Americans and others around the globe commemorated the 400th anniversary of a journey that began with the voyage to Jamestown, gave rise to a new nation and changed the world. It is an ongoing journey, as ideals of freedom and democracy continue to be tested and refined in the crucible of experience in the United States and internationally.

The roots of America's most valued institutions can be traced to the difficult beginnings at Jamestown and the Virginia colony. From the early interaction of American Indian, European and African cultures at Jamestown and throughout colonial America grew one of the most pluralistic and diverse societies on earth with a wide-ranging impact on other nations and other peoples.

The lessons provided on this Web site help teachers and students explore those vital legacies — connecting students with the past, encouraging and informing their civic involvement, and illuminating how the earliest experiences in America helped shape contemporary issues and institutions. The lessons on the site will help students explore:

  • Civic engagement in contemporary America
  • The site of the first permanent English settlement in America
  • The birthplace of representative government in America
  • Contributions of Native Americans and African Americans
  • The beginning of the evolution of Constitutionally protected religious freedom
  • Free markets, property rights and their effect on democratic government
