International Literacy Day (ILD) is fast approaching---a day to focus attention on worldwide literacy needs.

The International Reading Association (IRA) is observing ILD on Monday, September 9, and would like to encourage schools and libraries around the world to join the celebration. This year’s theme, “Invent Your Future,” focuses on the importance of literacy as a way for students to achieve their dreams. We invite educators to share the message that strong literacy skills pave the pathway to success—not only in the classroom but also in the workplace and in life.

So how will you and your students celebrate International Literacy Day? If you need a few ideas, please visit the Invent Your Future website and download the PDF Event Kit. This website was developed in partnership with Sony Pictures and the release of the movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. The protagonist in the movie Flint Lockwood dreams of being a famous inventor, and we want students to dream just as big for their own futures!

Take a few photos of your ILD celebration and share a short summary with us for a chance to win a Sony tablet for your classroom. And join us on Monday, September 9, at 8 PM EST for IRA’s ILD Tweet Chat, using the hashtag #ILD13 to join the conversation.
