Hello to all the Educational Interpreters,
Welcome back to the 2011-2012 school year. The beginning of the school year always brings new opportunities and challange's. It is also a time when we feel refreshed and ready to begin anew. Today as I began pre planning a thought came across my mind that I would like to share with my colleagues, "Are we teaching the teachers?" You may ask what does that mean? The process of working with an interpreter in the mainstream classroom is just as I stated, a process. Often we go into a classroom with a list of what an interpreter will and won't do, but have we taken the time to explain or teach exactly how to work with an interpreter? Yes, we must teach the teachers to utilize us properly. This instruction process does not begin on the first day of school. Take the initiative during pre planning to meet the teachers, put them at ease and explain our role. We could even go a step further and share with then the RID Standard Practice Papers on Educational Interpreting, or show them the website classroominterpreting.org and highlight the sections on interpreting. Explaining our role at the beginning of the year eases confusion. I wish everyone a successful school year.
