Full implementation of the Common Core State Standards will bring changes to classrooms around the country. A notable change will take place in mathematics instruction where the focus will be on learning topics in greater depth and in using academic vocabulary in reading and writing within the content area. How do we make the changes necessary? How do we effectively communicate to our students that we must teach less, but that they will learn more? What resources are available to aid us in changing our instructional practices?
One newer resource is Inside Mathematics, which is a professional resource for educators who wish to provide their students with the best instruction they can. Resources are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and provide video examples of demonstration lessons, samples of daily practice, reinforcement, intervention, and an insight into student learning. “Tools for Educators” includes Problems of the Month which are designed to be a school-wide endeavor. The problems are divided into five levels and allows students to ‘dig deeper’ and strive for stretching their mathematical thinking.
