TIP 1: Online Resource: Updating Your Personal Profile
Field Trainers now can edit personal information using the Update Profile link in the Trainer Resource Center area on the MarcoPolo Web site. The Profile Update page is linked to the Rusticello database, so any updates made here will automatically update the Personal Information page in Rusticello. Each trainer should periodically check his or her profile to confirm the accuracy of the following fields: contact information, organization, mailing list preference, grade band, K-12 responsibilities and discipline. Passwords also can be changed through this screen.

To update your personal information using the Update Profile link, follow the instructions below:
  1. Go to the Trainer Resource Center at http://www.marcopolo-education.org/pd/ftrc.aspx. Sign in if necessary.
  2. Click on the Update Profile link in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
  3. Once the Profile Update page appears, edit the desired fields.
  4. To add or change your organization information:
--Click the Enter Organization Information link. The page will refresh.
--Scroll down to the organization section. Enter the ZIP code of your organization (not your home address) into the text box and click the Search button.
--When the list of organizations appears in the Organization Select box, choose your organization and click the Select button.
--You will then be returned to the Update Profile page with that organization listed.
  5. Be sure to click the Save button before exiting.

TIP 2: Online Resource: Updated Trainer Resource Center
The MarcoPolo Trainer Resource Center has a new interface that allows you to browse for training resources or search titles and descriptions by keyword. Training resources and agendas created using the Agenda Creator also can be saved so that they are readily available from this page.

TIP 4: Training Tip: Connecting MarcoPolo to State Standards
"When planning their daily lessons, teachers in my region emphasize the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum standards and the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test. To find MarcoPolo Partner lessons that meet these specific objectives, they first determine the TEKS objectives for courses being taught in mathematics, language arts or science. Then, they go to the Rollout Network section of the MarcoPolo Web site and click on Content Projects. They scroll down the page, select Texas and then search the MarcoPolo TEKS alignment database by objective number. The teachers are delighted when they find relevant online resources that are not linked to textbooks!"

Ten States Now Provide MarcoPolo Certified Trainer Programs
By 2005, MarcoPolo hopes to achieve the goals of having a MarcoPolo educator in every school in the country and having every educator aware of the resources available on MarcoPolo. To this end, 10 states -- Georgia, Illinois, Maine, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington and West Virginia -- have developed MarcoPolo Certified Trainer (MPCT) programs, a vital part of each state's rollout strategy. MarcoPolo Certified Trainers will be identified through the MarcoPolo Web site, as well as through state-based announcements. MPCTs receive additional training and access to resources in Rusticello. For more information, visit http://marcopolo-education.org/pd/mpct.aspx or contact Stan Dunlap, Program Officer for Trainer Certification, at s_dunlap@frontier.net.

Updated Teacher Training Kit Available
The updated MarcoPolo Teacher Training Kit is now available in electronic and printed formats. A comprehensive overview of the MarcoPolo train-the-trainer model, the Training Kit provides a wide-ranging paradigm, numerous strategies and rich resources that help prepare Field Trainers for sharing MarcoPolo with other trainers and teachers. Updates to the kit include a new section featuring MarcoPolo's newest Partner, ReadWriteThink; new screenshots of the MarcoPolo and Partner Web sites; and updated information about using the Trainer Resource Center. To order a printed version of the kit or to download an electronic copy, please visit the Professional Development section of the MarcoPolo Web site and click on Order MarcoPolo Materials.

How educators and Field Trainers are using MarcoPolo

Rolling Out MarcoPolo Training: A Virginia Case Study
Extending the reach of MarcoPolo training is always challenging. Two of the biggest hurdles are money and time. In southwest Virginia, the Blue Ridge East Consortium used educational technology funds to implement a far-reaching MarcoPolo training program.

The consortium decided that the best way to have wide-spread impact was to train as many people as possible, and then encourage them to roll out training locally within a short period of time. Ultimately, each Field Trainer would be required to train at least five teachers in his or her local school.

The consortium set up six Train-the-Trainer sessions throughout the region during late September 2003. Each attendee was encouraged to choose a session most convenient for his or her schedule, which provided the added bonus of meeting people from other school districts and sharing ideas on how to best roll out training in their area.

A total of 126 Field Trainers attended these sessions. By Nov. 24, just 57 days into the project, these Field Trainers in turn had trained more than 600 teachers in 73 sessions, with many more scheduled for December. Congratulations to the Blue Ridge East Consortium for achieving its training goals!

MarcoPolo Goes Overseas
American schools in Europe recently had the opportunity to learn about the fantastic resources MarcoPolo offers to K-12 educators. Beth Klineman, a consultant to the MarcoPolo and former Cadre member, went to the United Kingdom and Spain to meet with several schools. "This opportunity presented itself as I planned a trip overseas to visit a friend and travel around," says Beth. "I thought it would be a great opportunity to bring MarcoPolo to schools there. By the time my plane landed two months later, I had several leads to contact and two possible conference presentations."

During her visit, Beth conducted several sessions on behalf of MarcoPolo, including a conference with the Mediterranean Association of International Schools (MAIS); a teacher-training session at the American School of Valencia, Spain; a one-hour awareness session at the American Community School of Cobham, England; and a meeting with the European Council of International Schools (ECIS).

While overseas, Beth learned that the American schools there adhere to either U.S. national education standards or AERO (American Education Reaches Out) standards, and most high schools offer the International Baccalaureate program. This experience has created a great opportunity for extending the reach of the MarcoPolo program.

Featured Training Lesson
This lesson appeared in the December 2003 issue of the classroom MarcoGram, which featured lessons and resources about the Nobel Prize.

"The Debate in the United States Over the League of Nations"
EDSITEment, National Endowment for the Humanities
Grades 9-12
http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=475

Background to the Lesson

In this curriculum unit of three lessons, students examine the central issues in the debate over America's participation in the League of Nations, including World War I-era president Woodrow Wilson's role in it and his overarching vision for peace. This unit can be taught in two to three class periods and is intended for students already familiar with the basic facts about WWI and its aftermath. The lesson requires students to review primary documents and images available through Partner-reviewed Web sites and then participate in guided discussions.

Preparing This Lesson for Your Training Session

Using This Lesson in Your Training Session

  • Begin on EDSITEment's home page. At the bottom left of the home page, click on About EDSITEment and walk your attendees through EDSITEment's Web site review process. Discuss how resources are reviewed and selected for use in EDSITEment lessons. Also show the complete list of EDSITEment-reviewed Web sites. Lessons on EDSITEment often refer users to resources available through these Partner-reviewed Web sites.

  • Walk your attendees through the "League of Nations" curriculum unit, noting all sections on the screen, including the left sidebar, the link to the printable version at the top right, and the link to national and state standards at the end of the lesson text.

  • Scroll down to the section entitled Selected EDSITEment Web Sites, which contains a list of the resources used in the lesson. Ask your attendees how familiar they are with these Web sites. While complete knowledge of the information offered on these Web sites isn't required for teachers who are using EDSITEment lessons with their students, it can be helpful for teachers to become familiar with the features and search functions of these popular sites.

  • Next, ask attendees to name some topics they are currently discussing in class for which they'd like to find primary materials and information. Select one or two topics and show attendees how to use the MarcoPolo Search Engine to locate relevant Partner lessons and Partner-reviewed content.

  • Finally, walk attendees through some popular Partner-reviewed and humanities-themed Web sites, such as American Memory. Show how to navigate the site and how to use the site's search function to easily locate primary documents, photographs and maps. Distribute a document analysis worksheet to each attendee and encourage the attendees to work in groups to find a relevant primary source and analyze its usefulness.

Follow-up

Return to EDSITEment's home page and click on the link to the Reference Shelf, a section which offers tips on evaluating online resources and provides links to style guides containing information on citing online sources. In their experience, have attendees seen an increase in students referencing Internet sources in homework or research assignments, or are printed materials still the dominant source of information? Do attendees feel students are able to correctly determine the accuracy of information that's posted on the Internet?
