The nation of Grenada gained independence from Britain in 1974.

Located in the Caribbean, the island of Grenada was traded several times between Great Britain and France during the colonial period. When nutmeg was introduced to Grenada in the 1800s, the island, then a British colony, quickly became an important source of spices for Europe. After a period of associated statehood with Great Britain in which Grenada retained full autonomy over all its internal affairs, Grenada was granted full independence on this day in 1974.
